If Only They Knew

If they only knew. It is a quartet of words that, sooner or later, finds a stage on nearly every tongue. Most every individual, at one time or another, has thought, or felt, or said, “If they only knew.” There are people who have positions of great prominence and high visibility, who are very private people. They long to be out of the spotlight and away from the lime light. Every now and then they whisper to themselves, “If they only knew…everyone thinks I love being in front. They think I cherish center state, if they only knew.” Again, if they only knew…but next to nobody does. If they only knew…but they do not. “Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen. Nobody knows…” I have forgotten the rest of that old song. How does it end? “Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen, nobody knows but Jesus.” That is the other half of the song. It is also the other half of the truth about life as a child of God. We are going to die with 1,000 good stories still inside. Even if we live with uncommon devotion to Christ our Lord, we will still probably die with about half our music still in us. But God knows. God knows the deepest, best, that no one else has ever seen in you. It is only for us to worship God, follow Jesus, and spend our lives making the best music we can, knowing all along the God we serve knows every note, measure, and beat of the other half of the music.
